MIDI basics: what MIDI isn't

MIDI is not audio.  The information sent down a MIDI cable is just a set of numbers that instructs the piece of equipment what instrument to play, what pitch it is set at etc.

i.e. if you hit a key on your MIDI keyboard it will sent a message out the MIDI OUT port that will instruct another device (if connected to the same MIDI channel) to play that specified note.

To hear the sound you will need to connect your MIDI devices audio ouputs to a sound system.  A MIDI instrument has two signal paths, one for audio the other one for MIDI.
